Grand Central Stairway, New York City
I waited for about 15 minutes for an opportunity to shoot this image with no-one in and then eventually gave up and shot it anyway. Later on, however, I appreciated that there was a lone woman standing there since it gives the picture a better sense of scale, I think.

you are 100% correct. The woman in the scene makes the shot. It would have been a good image without her but now it’s a great image because she draws you in.

I really like the sharpness of this image. Did you use a tripod since I know using a tripod in Grand Central is not allowed without prior permission.

Thanks, gents.
James – yes this was shot using a tripod. There’s a little secret about tripods and Grand Central that I’ve posted on several other blogs and which you may find useful. If you try to use one, you will be approached by a police officer or member of the station staff who will tell you that you can’t use one without a “Special Permission” pass. What they don’t tell you is that you can get these by asking nicely in the Stationmaster’s Office which is right by the main concourse. You can also, supposedly, get them if you contact the transit authority in advance but I found that it took only 5 minutes to request one on the scene.
Once you have the special sticker, you will still get accosted but can now point to the sticker and continue shooting.
